Chief Revenue Officer at Dallas Express

Dallas, TX, USA
The Dallas Express, a young and forward-thinking newspaper, has rapidly built a substantial subscriber base, surpassing expectations only a few years after launch. Our focus lies in delivering hard news enriched with original interviews, and meticulously covering Crime, Education, and City Hall issues. Our approach is simple yet impactful: to provide objective, fact-based news. At The Dallas Express, we consciously steer clear of the institutional constraints and ideological biases that often color major publications. Our language is straightforward, avoiding the trappings of over-politicized jargon and the unreliability of anonymous sources. We are dedicated to telling the stories that matter, the stories that others might shy away from. This commitment to clear, honest journalism is the cornerstone of our operations as we continuously cultivate a cohesive and efficient newsroom environment, supported by a dedicated team of around 30 professionals. In 2023, we launched a Mobile App, a multi-segment news magazine show, and grew our newsletter subscriptions by 50%. To further accelerate our growth, we are on the lookout for a Chief Revenue Officer to build out our revenue department. The right candidate will appreciate the entrepreneurial challenge of developing a new department and achieving early targeted milestones with support from the CEO, Director of Operations, and a team eager to support you. You’ll have wide latitude to develop our Revenue Strategy, identify which of our products can be effectively monetized, and staff up your team as necessary to implement that strategy. Our Business team will provide you with relevant data, and you can make informed decisions based on our site traffic, time-on-site, and other subscriber behavior. Role Overview: We are introducing the role of Chief Revenue Officer to lead our revenue generation and development efforts. The CRO will be a critical leader in our organization, directly influencing our revenue strategies and the cultural evolution needed to support these strategies. Revenue opportunities include straight fundraising (as DX is a 501c3), advertising, potentially paid prescriptions, hosting events and all other other opportunities. Responsibilities: • Develop and execute a comprehensive revenue plan, prioritizing high-value opportunities. • Set and achieve revenue goals based on site traffic, subscriber count, and digital space utilization. • Establish additional revenue streams in the forms of sponsored content and branded sections and features (e.g., our popular Crime Boss series). • Map out and execute on grant and mission-aligned nonprofit funding opportunities. • Recruit and manage a dedicated revenue team, providing leadership and direction. • Establish and maintain processes to meet immediate and long-term revenue targets. • Actively engage in public appearances and events as a prominent representative of The Dallas Express. • Work collaboratively with other departments to align content, technical, and business strategies with revenue goals. • Implement and oversee financial controls and budget management in collaboration with the Business team. • Facilitate and manage key projects, ensuring alignment with our editorial and revenue objectives. • Drive innovation in email and social media strategies to enhance revenue streams. • Provide guidance and support to the newsroom in conjunction with the Executive Editor. Qualifications: • 7-12 years of experience in a media environment, preferably in newspapers, magazines, or online publications. • Proven track record with demonstrable experience in business operations and change management. • Demonstrated ability in leading and mentoring a diverse team. • Strong understanding of the news cycle and ability to apply editorial guidelines effectively. • Expertise in multitasking and managing multiple projects simultaneously. • Solid experience in revenue generation and implementation of related projects. • Excellent time management skills and ability to work under tight deadlines. • Outgoing personality with a passion for building community connections. • Willingness to relocate to the Dallas Metro area. • Deep commitment to the mission and standards of The Dallas Express.
