The Vice President of is accountable for overseeing a team of reporters and guaranteeing the
creation of engaging, pertinent, and timely news stories for the subscribers of the Dallas Express.
This role requires you to possess a solid journalistic foundation, outstanding management
abilities, and a dedication to providing impactful regional level government and politics.
It is the responsibility of the VP of News to ensure that staff can adapt to new skills and workflows,
allowing DX to explore new opportunities and seize market share. You’ll lead the newsroom while
the CEO leads the organization.
The Vice President of News will work hand-in-hand with the CEO to shape the culture of a publication with six figure daily newsletter opens, and you will be the single person most directly shaping the newsroom culture and output.
You’ll be responsible for ensuring the quality of our content and the impact of our reporting on the city of Dallas. Notably, critical to success in this role is your ability to shape longform series and other mature investigative projects important to our readers and the citizens of our great city.
Responsibilities and duties:
• Must have the ability to efficiently manage a team of deputies to ensure a consistent flow
of news stories on a daily basis. They should be capable of utilizing audience data to make informed decisions regarding news coverage and should aim to increase content depth, interactivity, and reach by leveraging digital tools to enhance audience engagement.
• Serve as DX's most hands-on coach of reporters and editors – not as a workflow operator but as a coach and strategic leader, guiding employees to better performance and delegating as appropriate. Put more simply, you’ll be required to provide both strategic oversight and quality control of
the news operation.
• Provide critical feedback to reporters and editors in conjunction with the Executive Editor throughout the reporting and editing process, with a focus on identifying and correcting conceptual story flaws, not just grammar or style.
• Directly oversee the Executive Editor, who oversees the Senior Assistant News Editors.
• Work closely with the Executive Editor, who reports directly to you, to publish impactful news and to
guide the newsroom in creating in-depth enterprise pieces.
• Serve as the primary collaborator with editors and reporters to craft impactful stories and enhance
the quality of daily journalistic content.
• Elevate stories about digital transformation by pursuing opportunities for in-depth enterprise stories,
including those with Texas (and occasionally national) reach.
• Enhance audience engagement, increase readership, and drive digital growth through editorial
strategies that leverage unrealized revenue opportunities.
• Demonstrate a strong ability to analyze and interpret metrics to inform long-term coverage
decisions.
• Develop priority-based coverage to increase newsletter subscriptions and engagement rates.
• Develop the skills of DX's journalists, delivering productive criticism of their stories and processes.
• Coordinate with the Executive Editor on best practice training techniques for the newsroom.
• Create a clear and compelling vision for the journalistic tone and style of DX.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• A minimum of five years of experience in journalism, with a background in newsroom management and content-to-revenue generation.
• Demonstrated record of delivering high-quality, impactful journalism in a daily digital environment.
• Deep knowledge of the principles of journalism, ethical guidelines and legal considerations.
• A firm dedication to nonpartisan news coverage.
• Decisive leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and develop a group of journalists at various
stages of their careers.
• Superior written and verbal communication skills, including outstanding editing abilities.
• Masterful knowledge of digital publishing platforms, analytics software and social media platforms.
